What You Need
 

 
How To Make It
 
  1. Start with a clean eggshell that has only the top of the shell missing. (See the illustration)
  2. Cut a 1" strip of construction paper and make a small ring to hold the egg and keep it from rolling around. You can decorate the strip with crayons if you wish.
  3. Draw a face on the egg (for young kids, a grownup might do this part). Be sure to put it on the upper part of the shell, so that it will show when the egg is on the paper ring.
  4. Fill the shell with potting soil, and then sprinkle seed on the top. Add a very thin layer of soil over the seeds.
  5. Water and keep in a sunny location. When the grass sprouts, your egg will grow hair!





String Eggs

These lacy eggs are fun to make - but this project is messy! You might want to do it outside on a nice spring day. You can put decorations inside these eggs or leave them empty.

Parental supervision is recommended.

What You Need
 

  • Balloons
  • Colored crochet string
  • Liquid stiffener *
  • Large plastic sheets (to cover work area)
  • Waxed paper or plastic (to dry project on)
  • Gallon sized plastic bag
  • Wet washrags
  • Scissors
  • Lace, ribbon, etc.; optional

 
How To Make It
 
  1. Cover work area...with something like a plastic tarp (so things don't stick to it) or large plastic bags...have a few wet washrags handy.
  2. Blow up balloons (not big...unless you are wanting to put a LOT of decorations inside it). Put colored crochet string in a gallon size bag and put stiffener in it with a bit of water to dilute just slightly. Mush mush mush.
  3. Pull string out a little bit at a time out of the bag, using your fingers to squeeze excess stiffener off. Wrap around the balloon in a criss cross fashion... until well covered. There will be a lot of "air" space in it...it does not make it solid.
  4. Let dry on something like wax paper or plastic.
  5. When egg is dry (could be a couple of days!), pop the balloon and remove it.
  6. Then you can either hot glue or regular glue ribbons, pearls, laces, or other decorations on the outside...or cut it open and fill with easter grass and decorations. Or you can just hang it or put it on the table as is.
  7. How much crochet string does it use? If I remember right with the Large balloons we blew up...it was probably a whole large spool of crochet thread to cover it.
  8. These came out really pretty with multi-colored crochet string.

 
Tips
 
* Liquid Stiffener - this is sold at many craft and fabric stores and is used to make fabric stiff (like starch). It is often used to make cheesecloth ghosts around Halloween
